General Dentistry
General dentistry encompasses multiple dental services, including routine checkups, preventative care, dental implants, and crowns. General dentistry has a focus on improving your overall oral hygiene.
When patients come in for routine appointments and combine that with proper dental hygiene habits at home, we can prevent dental problems from occurring in the first place. We also offer emergency dental treatment. For a dentist in Forest Hill that provides extensive general dentistry services, contact us today to make an appointment.
What happens during a routine dental checkup?
· A dentist will first visually inspect each tooth in your mouth with specialised instruments. They are looking for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, or any other abnormal conditions.
· If your dentist suspects a problem that may be difficult to see with their instruments, you may have to have an x-ray taken of your mouth for a more comprehensive view of your teeth and gums.
· We will remove any plaque or tartar buildup and clean your teeth with a scale and polish. Your dentist will likely use specialised instruments to remove large pieces of tartar and deep clean above and below your gums. Once the surfaces are smooth, your dentist will polish your teeth to remove stains.
What happens after a checkup?
After the examination is over, your dentist will discuss any further treatment recommendations, depending on your teeth’s status. This can cover tooth brushing techniques, diet, or alcohol and smoking habits.
Depending on your examination outcome, your dentist may suggest you return for another visit. Or they may even refer you to a specialist if your issue requires specialised expertise and treatment.

Teeth Whitening
What causes tooth discolouration?
Teeth discolouration is a common problem among the population and has many causes, including age, diet, and poor hygiene habits. Teeth are composed of multiple layers. The outermost layer is called enamel and is a white colour. Underneath the enamel is a layer called dentin. This is a yellowish colour.
You can stain your enamel through drinking or eating certain foods or drinks. Red wine, coffee, tea, and soft drinks are common beverages that are likely to stain enamel. Consuming many of these products and not practising good brushing habits can cause long-lasting staining to your enamel.
As you get older, your enamel gets thinner. The thinner the enamel becomes, the more the dentin layer shows through. Because of this, the yellowish colour of the dentin will start to show through the white enamel layer, giving your teeth a yellow appearance.
In-Chair Whitening
Focus Dental Group offers teeth whitening in Forest Hill. One method we use is in-chair whitening. This is a fast process that takes around one hour to complete. Using a gel and a blue LED light, we can whiten your teeth up to 8 shades lighter.
Take-Home Whitening
Another method of teeth whitening is take-home whitening. Our dentist will make a mould of your teeth then provide you with custom-fitting trays. Once at home, you fill the trays with our provided gel, then place the trays inside your mouth for a specified amount of time. After one or two weeks, the process will be complete.
